With as much screaming we hear from the Right about Planned Parenthood “killing millions of babies,” one would expect conservatives to care about each and every child who is gunned down by an irresponsible or horrifically violent human being. While the solution to abortion isn’t “more abortion” in their eyes, the Right often feeds us the same tired line each and every time a child is killed by a gun: The solution is more guns. This may seem nonsensical and probably a bit terrifying — and it is both — but that is, unfortunately, the state of America today. After each shooting, we are told of the mythical “Good guy with a gun,” a “responsible gun owner” whose very presence prevents lives from being lost everywhere he goes. Unfortunately, a “good guy with a gun” often looks exactly like a “bad guy with a gun.”
On Tuesday, one of the NRA’s precious “responsible gun owners” defended himself against road rage by shooting at a car that he apparently viewed as a threat to his manhood. As often occurs, while the man was “brave” enough to pull out his gun and use it, he didn’t stick around. The shooter, who was driving a maroon or dark red Toyota Corolla or Camry with tinted windows, fired his weapon at a vehicle whose driver had apparently irritated him and struck a four-year-old girl in the head.
The little girl, who was obviously not a threat to anything besides her daddy’s candy stash (assuming he has one), was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. When a Bernalillo County Sheriff’s deputy pulled up to the scene of the crime thinking he had simply found a distressed vehicle, he discovered that the little girl had been shot by an armed maniac who, like many other ammosexuals across the nation, considers his precious gun to be a solution to all of life’s minor problems.
“The cars were both moving westbound when one car pulled up against the other and started firing,” Officer Simon Drobik said, explaining that the girl’s father filled him in that his daughter was murdered because of a fit of road rage. She wasn’t robbing a store, or mugging someone, nor was she even armed. She was just a little girl sitting in his car seat.
“This is a complete disrespect of human life. This is something that should not be happening in Albuquerque, New Mexico,” Albuquerque Police Chief Gorden Eden said. “I’ve seen tragic loss of children in car crashes. To me, this is one of those crimes that is unexplainable. There is no way to explain your way out of this.”
Police are still seeking the shooter, who is described as a white male in his mid-20’s to early 30’s with short, dark hair and possibly a fade haircut. The man is described as having a manicured goatee, a thin face, a soft jaw, and an average build. He was wearing a black shirt with gold or yellow writing at the time of the murder.
“We are in desperate need of information,” Eden said. “Whatever information you have. Even if you think you saw something, please call 505-242-COPS.”
Unfortunately, this sort of thing is not an isolated incident. In August, a white man driving a BMW pulled his gun on someone during a road rage incident. Fortunately, no shots were fired — but the use of guns as a solution to minor irritations is easily explained by a Harvard School of Public Health study that found people are more likely to engage in road rage when they have the option of filling someone with a lethal dose of Freedom. A University of Wisconsin study confirms that the mere presence of guns stimulates violent thoughts and actions in those who are nearby — they don’t even have to be holding the weapon!
Unfortunately, it is doubtful that the NRA will speak out on this issue in any way that will be productive. We won’t hear right-wing media cry for reasonable measures to keep weapons out of the hands of someone who would murder a child because he got a little angry on the freeway, nor will we hear a single condemnation of America’s gun culture. The solution, as always, is more guns. Perhaps it’s time to consider arming preschoolers, after all. It’s for their own protection.
Police have taken a man into custody, but have not yet released details. Sgt. Liz Thompson says that they will be seeking charges of murder, child abuse and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon at “minimum.”
