BREAKING: Oklahoma Just Banned ALL Abortions, Including Cases Of Rape & Incest

The Republican war against women has just reached a new low. The state legislature of Oklahoma, without any discussion or debate, has just unilaterally banned abortions in their state. The Senate voted 33-12 to make performing an abortion a felony punishable by three years in prison and prevents doctors who perform abortions from gaining a license. Republican Governor Mary Fallin has five days to decide whether or not to sign the bill.

The first law of its kind in the nation, it is an outrageous attack on women’s rights and a defiant rejection of the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade ruling. Obviously unconstitutional, Oklahoma will be immediately sued and this is charade is nothing but a colossal waste of taxpayer time and money.

Bill sponsor Nathan Dahm and small-government hypocrite said that “since I believe life begins at conception, it should be protected, and I believe it’s a core function of state government to defend that life from the beginning of conception.” The smug arrogance of conservatives is simply astounding. Since he believes in a politically convenient excuse to deprive women of the right to control their own bodies, that’s all that matters.

The legislature also approved a bill that would require the state Department of Health to develop informational material “for the purpose of achieving an abortion-free society,” but declined to fund it, rendering it a symbolic gesture. The dominance of anti-abortion religious extremists in the state of Oklahoma – and across the rest of the Midwest and South – is a blight on our secular, multifaith society. Oklahoma has the second highest teen birth rate in the country – and with laws like this, it’s easy to figure out why. It is immensely frustrating to see Republican legislatures continually drag their constituents back into the Dark Ages with their counterproductive religious extremism. This is the nonsense that state legislators are wasting their time with while “still grappling with a $1.3 billion budget hole that could lead to deep cuts to public schools, health care and the state’s overcrowded prison system.” Priorities, right?
