The Daily Show Set Up A “No Gays” Food Truck In North Carolina To “Test” Its Anti-Gay Law
Proponents of North Carolina’s discriminatory and definitely unconstitutional anti-gay law HB 2, like Governor Pat McCrory, promise that the law doesn’t give businesses free license to turn away customers. The intrepid comedians at the Daily Show, however, sought to put that to the test, and demonstrate to North Carolinians just what the full implications of HB 2 really are – by opening a barbecue truck and then turning away all potential customers because they might be gay.
So in this clip, Jordan Klepper and Roy Wood Jr. rent a food truck, open up the Bone Bros: Flamin’ BBQ, and head down to the Tar Heel State to teach people an important lesson.
Roy Wood Jr explains that “I wanted to show North Carolinians what HB2 would look like in action so I rented a food truck made up a fake barbecue company and set out to refuse service to people by telling them they’re gay. Let’s be clear, I don’t care if they’re gay but HB2 says I can do this Jim Crow-level sh*t and nobody can stop me.”
Their prank unfolds in hilarious fashion. The upset customers were given free food after they got a dose of what discrimination really feels like.
Roy concludes: “It’s fun here, you can say whatever the f**k you want. Is this what being white is like? You just tell people no for no reason?”
HB 2 eliminates anti-discrimination provisions that protect LGBTQ Americans, dictates what bathrooms they can and can’t use, and just to add insult to injury, also includes a provision that prevents cities from raising the minimum wage. The law specifically targets transgender Americans from not using bathrooms that don’t correspond to their “biological sex,” thus mounting an existential refutation of the idea of gender fluidity and helping to propagate a dangerous myth that transgender Americans are simply pretending to have different genders in order to sexually assault women and children. It’s been declared unconstitutional and is a blight on our nation that needs to be repealed as soon as possible.
