Nancy Pelosi Just Demanded That Jeff Sessions Resign IMMEDIATELY
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has just called on Attorney General Jeff Sessions to resign immediately, saying that he that he “lied under oath during his confirmation hearing before the Senate.”
Early Wednesday evening, The Washington Post published evidence that Sessions and the Russian ambassador held at least two meetings during the 2016 election, meetings that Sessions, under oath, swore never took place.
Pelosi made her demands clear in light of evidence that Sessions had perjured himself:
She said that Sessions “is not fit to serve as the top law enforcement officer of our country and must resign. There must be an independent, bipartisan, outside commission to investigate the Trump political, personal, and financial connections to the Russians.”
Both meetings took place prior to the election when Sessions was still a Senator from Alabama and working with the Trump campaign as Trump’s closest foreign policy adviser. Yet, during his confirmation hearing for attorney general, Sessions said he “did not have communications with the Russians.”
When reached for comment, Sessions offered the weak excuse that he didn’t remember what they discussed during those meetings and that “he didn’t think they were relevant.”
“We now know that statement is false,” said Pelosi, saying that Sessions “has never had the credibility to oversee the FBI investigation of senior Trump officials’ ties to the Russians. That is why Democrats have consistently called for Sessions to recuse himself from any oversight of the investigation.”
Senator Lindsay Graham (R-SC) has called for a special prosecutor to be appointed if indeed Sessions did speak to the Russian ambassador. Lying under oath is a federal offense, punishable by imprisonment.
If Sessions does resign, he will be the second high-ranking official in the administration to resign over ties to the Russian government less than two full months into Trump’s presidency.
How many more will have to resign as this story unfolds? The stench of treason rises all the way to the top. It’s clear that a significant portion of the Trump administration is implicated in this mess – and with luck, they will all go down with this sinking ship.
