Trump Just Stopped Sally Yates From Giving A Damning Trump-Russia Testimony

President Donald Trump and congressional Republicans have been trying to stall the investigation into Team Trump’s collusion with the Russian Government ever since the story broke. Now the most serious act of sabotage has come to light.

The Washington Post reports that the Trump administration actively sought to block former acting Attorney General Sally Yates from testifying to Congress. It was successful, Yates’s testimony scheduled for this week will not be taking place.

The Justice Department notified Yates earlier this month that the administration considers a lot of her possible testimony to be barred from discussion in a congressional hearing because the topics she would address are covered by the presidential communication privilege.

The presidential communication privilege gives the President the right to withhold publication of any communications made to or by him so long as they occurred during the President’s performance of his responsibilities.

Yates and former intelligence officials were supposed to testify in front of the House Intelligence Committee this week, but the hearing was canceled without warning by the committee chairman Devin Nunes (R-CA).

Yates was acting attorney general for the last year of former President Obama’s tenure and was fired by Trump in January after she ordered that the Justice Department not defend Trump’s first Muslim travel ban.

Trump already has an ax to grind with Yates, alongside not supporting his racist travel ban she was also a key player in the investigation of Michael T. Flynn, the disgraced former National Security Adviser.

An anonymous source inside Trump’s administration alleged that Yates’ testimony was canceled because it was likely to contradict some official White House statements. Yates was sent a letter on march 23rd informing her of this, but she replied that she was still willing to testify. Shortly after, her hearing was canceled by Nunes.

The top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, Adam Schiff (D-CA). had this to say:

[The committee is aware that Yates] ought permission to testify from the White House. Whether the White House’s desire to avoid a public claim of executive privilege to keep her from providing the full truth on what happened contributed to the decision to cancel today’s hearing, we do not know. But we would urge that the open hearing be rescheduled without delay and that Ms. Yates be permitted to testify freely and openly.

If you read between the lines, it’s clear that Schiff is accusing the White House of a cover-up, but he doesn’t need to beat around the bush. Twitter has already got a copy of the letters that prove it was Trump’s administration that blocked Yates.

At this point, it’s fairly obvious that Devin Nunes is doing Trump’s dirty work, and thanks to his awful leadership the investigation is in disarray. Nunes has ignored calls to recuse himself after it emerged yesterday that he secretly visited the White House grounds in the days before he announced that he had been shown evidence of incidental surveillance of Trump’s transition team.

Nunes is a Trump shill and must go, now.

The extent to which the Trump administration is going to hide the truth is telling. This investigation has the power to take down Trump and his cronies and they know it. Now alarm bells are ringing and they are using more overt methods to get what they want.
