Bipartisan Intel Members Just Saw Nunes’s Evidence. Their Response Says it ALL

In a stunning punctuation to Rep. Devin Nunes’s (R-CA) troubled tenure as the head of the House Intelligence Committee’s investigation into the Trump Campaign’s involvement with Russia’s operation to undermine the 2016 presidential election, CNN is reporting this evening that intelligence documents, referenced by Rep. Nunes as evidence of wrong doing by the Obama administration, prove nothing of the sort.

According to CNN:

“After a review of the same intelligence reports brought to light by House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes, both Republican and Democratic lawmakers and aides have so far found no evidence that Obama administration officials did anything unusual or illegal, multiple sources in both parties tell CNN.

“Their private assessment contradicts President Donald Trump’s allegations that former Obama national security adviser Susan Rice broke the law by requesting the “unmasking” of US individuals’ identities. Trump had claimed the matter was a “massive story.”
In a now-infamous March 4th tweet storm, President Trump accused former President Obama of “wiretapping” Trump Tower during the campaign.  After weeks of enduring heavy criticism and outright rebukes from senior members of congress and the intelligence community, officials in the White House were desperate for a shift in the narrative.
In a move with zero precedent and even less integrity, Rep. Nunes met with members of the Trump administration at a secret meeting on White House grounds on March 21st to review intelligence documents they believed would lend weight to Trump’s wiretapping claims.  The next day, he held a hastily arranged press conference to discuss the documents that he said “clearly show” members of the Trump campaign were monitored, and then marched back to the White House to brief the President – not his committee.
At first, Rep. Nunes would not reveal who shared these documents with him.  Only after the solid reporting by the New York Times, and later by the Washington Post, did we learn that there were in fact 3 White House officials leaked the documents to Nunes and arranged for him to review them.
It appears that now, however, the smoke is finally starting to clear.  Last week, under unrelenting pressure, Rep. Nunes finally recused himself from the Russia probe.  And now, this damning CNN report confirms what most people suspected all along: that the entire escapade was a complete farce.
Congress is currently in recess through April 25th, but hearings in both the House and the Senate are set to resume at the end of the month.  At that point, the White House’s sloppy delay and distract operation, with Rep. Nunes as its willing collaborator, will have run its course.  Then we can get back to asking the real question: Has this Presidency finally run its course, too?
