Democrats Have Just Begun Drawing Up Articles Of Impeachment Against Trump
Good news! Democrat Congressman Al Green (D-TX) has informed C-SPAN that he is drawing up articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump with the help of some constitutional lawyers.
“We will move forward, and as a matter of fact, I am currently crafting, drafting if you will, articles of impeachment,” he said.
Green made his first call for Trump’s impeachment last week after Trump fired FBI Director James Comey.
During a press conference in Houston, Green said:
“These acts, when combined, amount to intimidation and obstruction. If the president is not above the law he should be charged by way of impeachment by the US House of Representatives.”
However Green won’t get far without allies. Impeachments require more than one man’s written charges. Full impeachment will require a majority vote in the House and a two-thirds majority in the Senate. Both houses are currently controlled by Republicans.
Green is the first Democrat to publicly acknowledge initiating the process.
Representative Adam Schiff (D-CA), who is investigating Trump’s Russia ties, said: “No one ought to, in my view, rush to embrace the most extraordinary remedy that involves the removal of the president from office.”
Other prominent Democrats have also asked for patience.
But Al Green refuses to sit idly by while Trump destroys our country and ruins our reputation abroad:
“At some point, we’ll wait to see what others will do, and if no one else does, the president has committed an impeachable act, and I will take it upon myself to do that.”
It took guts for Green to be the first to openly take the first legal steps towards ending the Trump nightmare.
While Green’s actions aren’t likely to do much in the short-term, the fact that one politician on Capitol Hill has begun the process will encourage others to do the same.
Intimidation and obstruction are serious charges, but it would nice to also see charges relating to Trump’s alleged collusion with the Russian government. This won’t happen until the various investigations have published their findings and conclusions.
