Mike Pence Just Gave The Most Shameful Speech About TrumpCare

The President may be easily distracted by the simplest provocation on social media, but Vice President Mike Pence is staying on message like a champ. Sure, the message is outdated and has been completely debunked, but his ability to stick to it anyway is remarkable.

That’s exactly what he did at the annual Republican National Committee Retreat dinner in Chicago, IL tonight.  In a fiery campaign style speech,  Pence ran-off the greatest hits of conservative talking points in a desperate plea to rank and file party members to hold the line on the President’s agenda, particularly when it comes to healthcare.

While the event wasn’t televised, the Vice President had someone tweet the highlights of his speech one talking point at a time, peaking with this zinger:

Yes, you read that correctly. Healthcare should be based on personal responsibility and the free market.

The cornerstone of the Republicans’ ObamaCare repeal plan is a massive cut and cap to Medicaid.  Medicaid currently covers 75 million Americans.  36 million – a full 50% – of total Medicaid enrollees are children, many of whom qualify for a federal ObamaCare subsidy because their parents couldn’t afford to get them healthcare otherwise.

Is the Vice President suggesting that Children need to take personal responsibility for their cancer treatment?  Does he expect those kids to shop around for the insurance provider with the cheapest prescription drug plan or the best rates on anesthesia for emergency surgeries?

Pathetic.

The ‘personal responsibility’ line is an old Republican canard, designed specifically to touch a nerve with the party base and differentiate themselves from those needy, entitled Democrats who want the government to give them everything.

See, conservatives have deep rooted suspicions that Democrats and Liberals, over the last 50 years or so, have used the federal government to expand the rights of  minorities, immigrants, women and other groups – all at their expense.

They can’t say they want their power back from those previously marginalized groups, for all the obvious reasons, so instead they’ve decided to attack the federal government and the many entitlements and programs they think enable those groups.  If they take those programs away in favor of something that sounds very principled and patriotic like ‘personal responsibility,’ they think the power they believe they’ve lost will somehow come back to them.

The only problem is, the Republicans have come to like and depend on programs like Medicaid and other ObamaCare reforms.  Just last week, Morning Consult polled Republican voters and found that 3 out of 10 them disapproved of the American Health Care Act, the official name of the GOP’s ObamaCare repeal and replace initiative.

Vice President Pence might be applauded for staying on message.  Unfortunately for him, and his party, the message has changed.

Here are some other live tweets from the Vice President’s speech:

Add your name to millions demanding that Congress take action on the President’s crimes. IMPEACH DONALD TRUMP!
