Before Donald Trump was a teleprompter-reading president calling for an escalation of America’s longest war, he was a tweeting reality personality. While the tweeting has continued, it seems that when it comes to foreign policy those two iterations would have little in common
Last night, President Trump laid out his Afghanistan “strategy,” little more than a Trumpian call to win with no detail as to how the winning might be accomplished. Nevertheless, his directive to stay in Afghanistan is an ankle-breaking pivot from his attacks on President Obama for eight years.
President Trump is neither diplomatic nor insightful in his 140-character diplomacy. He is brash, blunt, and scathingly critical of the plan future Trump called for last night.
(Note: Trump frequently calls for investments to be made in rebuilding the U.S. rather than Afghanistan. His speech arguing for the opposite comes on the heels of a White House “Infrastructure Week” in which infrastructure was hardly discussed and the president’s infrastructure commission collapsed. )
