In this clip, Bernie Sanders praises the success of Scandinavian democratic socialism and asks why we shouldn’t want to replicate those achievements here in the United States.
“In countries in Scandinavia like Denmark, Norway, Sweden, they are very democratic countries…Voter turnout is a lot higher than it is in the United States. In those countries, health care is the right of all people; college education and graduate school is free; retirement benefits, child care are stronger than the United States of America.
The countries of Scandinavia regularly score at the top of world rankings in happiness and economic prosperity. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out they must be doing something right.
But the most important difference for Sanders is the fact that “In those countries by and large government works for ordinary people and the middle class, rather than, as is the case right now in our country, for the billionaire class.”
Truer words have never been spoken. The American people need to realize that “democratic socialism” has nothing to do with communism or the totalitarian regimes that used those concepts to control their population. We need to drop the stigma from democratic socialism and begin exploring how those ideas might have some real benefits for a country that seriously needs it.
