In this clip from Real Time, Bill Maher rips FOX News, the Republican Party, and the right-wing propaganda machine in general for their attempts to rewrite the narrative surrounding the brutal terrorist attack at the Emmanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina by “an unapologetic white supremacist.” He begins by saying “At FOX News, they couldn’t decide whether this was not the right time to talk about guns or the right time to not talk about racism” begins Maher.
He then shreds the Republican establishment’s refusal to acknowledge the obvious, self-declared racist element of the attacks. “You know, the shooter purposefully went to a black church, told the victims he had to do it because they were taking over, he wore pro-apartheid stickers on his jacket, his friend says he was into segregation, he talked about starting a race war, so naturally, when it comes to what motivated him, Republicans are stumped. They cannot figure it out!” Nikki Haley, Jeb Bush, Lindsey Graham, and Bobby Jindal all have given some kind of statement regarding their “incomprehension,” and their refusal to acknowledge the truth of the matter does a terrible injustice to the victims.
Maher finishes with a zinger: “When a guy talks about the South will rise again, he’s not talking about IQ levels.” It’s a viciously tart condemnation of the right wing’s refusal to face the facts in the horrific Charleston shootings, but it’s reassuring to see the left won’t let them get away with it.
