Many jokes have been made about Ted Cruz’s “presidential campaign” being nothing but an elaborate book tour, but new revelations that Cruz has been buying his own books in an attempt to game the New York Times Bestseller List makes them even funnier.
New York Times spokeswoman Eileen Murphy says that: “We have uniform standards that we apply to our best seller list, which includes an analysis of book sales that goes beyond simply the number of books sold. This book didn’t meet that standard this week…in the case of this book, the overwhelming preponderance of evidence was that sales were limited to strategic bulk purchases.”
“Strategic book purchases” is code for “bought the books himself”- or used a super PAC to do it for him, like Ben Carson and Sarah Palin have done in the past. It’s no surprise that Cruz’s “book” isn’t doing very well- there can’t be much to differentiate it from the other identical propaganda works released by Republican presidential candidates- intensely concentrated and self-congratulatory nationalism, a fetishistic ode to the free market, suspiciously detailed depictions of what God really wants from America, and a dash of paranoid xenophobia for good measure.
Cruz, having already lost all the momentum his obnoxious and attention-seeking antics gained at the beginning of his campaign, released a desperate and really quite sad attack on the New York Times for their “partisan bias”: “We call on the Times, release your so-called ‘evidence.’ Demonstrate that your charge isn’t simply a naked fabrication, designed to cover up your own partisan agenda” whines the Cruz campaign.
The New York Times, probably with much eye-rolling, informed him that they caught him cheating the system and have punished his “book” for it. It’s just another sign that the Cruz campaign is just as insignificant as we thought it was in the first place- just another nobody in a crowded field of cookie-cutter Republican Bible-thumping xenophobes and free market fascists.
