The riotous mob of Tea Party extremists in both the House and Senate have sworn to cut all federal funding for Planned Parenthood, using the doctored smear videos as an excuse to ratchet up the culture war against women.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Rep. Mick Mulvaney (R-SC) have announced that their latest act of legislative terrorism will be to shut down the government in order to defund Planned Parenthood, no matter the cost to health of America’s women or the American economy. If you’ll recall, the last time the self-righteous bully shut down the government in yet another failed attempt to repeal Obamacare, it cost the US economy some $24 billion dollars. But recent infighting in the Senate clearly shows that Cruz doesn’t care.
It’s clear now that Cruz has no intention of passing any legislation or has any interest in governing. He is a nihilistic whirlwind of selfish ambition, recklessly burning bridges and picking fights with the party establishment. He is purposefully fanning the flames as Rome burns, starving his own beast so that he can blame his superiors and the nebulous “Washington machine,” somehow presenting himself as the solution for a problem that he caused. It’s a despicable abuse of his office; a tremendous affront to the institution of public service.
But beyond Cruz and his megalomaniacal crusade, the rest of the GOP is just as eagerly forming battle lines and frothing at the mouth for a chance to get rid of Planned Parenthood. After their stunning defeat over same-sex marriage, they have regrouped and moved on to attacking women’s rights in a desperate attempt to stay relevant and prove to their disapproving base that they are capable of achieving anything at all.
The Republican plot to defund Planned Parenthood will go nowhere. President Obama and the Democratic Party will never bend on this issue. If the Republicans wish to discard the votes of single women into the bin where the votes of African-Americans, LGBT Americans, and Latino-Americans already lie, then so be it.
