In this clip, Hillary Clinton calls out Donald Trump and the anti-immigrant fanatics on the Republican side of the aisle for their alarming rhetoric and delusional fantasies of deporting eleven million Americans.
A reporter poses this question to the Democratic frontrunner at a Minneapolis campaign stop today: How do you plan on dealing with 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S.?
“Well, I’m glad you asked me that,” she responds. “Because I know that there are some on the other side who are seriously advocating to deport 11-12 million people who are working here.”
I find it the height of irony that a party which espouses small government would want to unleash a massive government effort, which might include the National Guard and others, to go and literally pull people out of their homes and their workplaces, round them up and, I don’t know, put them in buses or boxcars, in order to take them across the border. I find that absurd but appalling. And that’s why I support comprehensive immigration reform.”
Clinton has noticeably been ratcheting up the pressure on her Republican rivals, and it’s a welcome change. Trump’s xenophobia and the response it has been getting from conservative voters is extremely disturbing, and the talk of mass deportations from the right is growing. It’s the sort of hypernationalism and neo-fascism that can be seen in European far-right parties and leads nowhere good. It’s about time the left started to hit back in defense of the Hispanic Americans that play such a crucial role in keeping our economy strong.
