Donald Trump’s campaign for president, despite his ever-rising numbers, is embarrassing side show that is likely to never make it to the big stage. However, the mainstream media’s infotainment approach to the 24/7 political news cycle has resulted in an outrageous focus on Trump and his antics. There are serious candidates in the race on the Democratic side, of course, but all mainstream news organizations seem to care about is Donald Trump’s outrageous public statements and childish twitter tantrums.
Katrina Vanden Heuvel, editor of The Nation, appeared on the This Week show to make her frustrations with the Trump circus public. Vanden Heuvel was visibly frustrated that the panel of which she was a part was once again focusing on Donald Trump. When fellow panelists Matthew Dowd, Bill Kristol and Donna Brazile eagerly went back and forth on the possibility of a Donald Trump GOP nomination, Vanden Heuvel said this in a break in the Trump banter:
Here’s a shocker, we are living in anti-establishment times. Who knew we would be sitting here September 6 looking at this landscape. This is a time you don’t want to make predictions. It is a fluid rewrite the rules time.
Now, this has been summer of Trump, but I think the media has done a great disservice to this country: wall to wall coverage of a bully. And has virtually ignored Bernie Sanders who is today — but why, it’s wall-to-wall coverage, wall-to-wall. It is free air time. It is obsessive. And I think in that it is a disservice. And gatekeepers are defining what is viable.
Bernie Sanders is a serious candidate with serious issues. He is today first in New Hampshire, closing in on Iowa, but too many are saying he’s not viable. And I say Americans should be trusted and don’t have a downsize policy. Include an alternative…
Bernie Sanders is a serious candidate whose populist message is seriously resonating with fed-up progressives and the average, everyday American. Instead of focusing on the embarrassment that is Donald Trump’s racist, misogynist, anti-immigrant, and childish twitter feed, the press should be using their platform to really talk about Bernie Sanders. The media really should stop feeding Trump’s ego and giving his ignorant base a steady dose of fascist populism. There are real presidential candidates who actually deserve this press time and attention. Kudos to Katrina Vanden Heuvel for saying what we’re all thinking.
