Pope Francis I has become a beloved figure around the world for his liberal tendencies (for a Pope) and genuine efforts to not only reform the Catholic Church but also taking important stands on issues like climate change. Unfortunately, his efforts to get Syrian refugees housed in Europe have aroused the ire of white supremacists, who have taken to the internet to plot his assassination during his upcoming trip to the United States.
“The pope deserves to be executed for crimes against the white race” demands one user on the website Stormfront, a neo-Nazi website that was popular with the perpetrator of the Emmanuel Zion AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina. “This mofo [sic] needs a third eye, right in the middle of where his two existing eyes are” says another. “White people need to be protected from the genocidal anti-white Pope and the genocidal anti-white religion he pushes.”
The irony of would-be genocidaires needing to be protected from genocide put aside, it would appear that these white supremacists are very concerned about the hundreds of thousands of Syrian Arabs who will be moving into Europe. They seem to believe the Pope is masterminding a scheme to erase the “white race” and give their “white homeland” to non-whites, to fulfill his ideology of “cultural Marxism.”
The users of the websites concerned have been known to commit mass murder and carry out terrorist attacks. With the anti-immigrant sentiment in our nation reaching a crescendo, fueled by Republican racist rabble-rousing, we can only hope that these are truly just the ravings of madmen hiding behind a computer screen.
