In this clip, comedian George Carlin offers his take on class conflict in America and how the system is rigged to allow the wealthiest Americans to succeed while the poor and the middle classes are pit against each other with every trick in the book – race, income, religion, ethnicity, jobs, education, social status, sexuality.
“Anything they can do to keep us fighting with each other so they can keep going to the bank!” says Carlin. “You know how I describe the economic and social classes of this country? The upper class gets all of the money and pays none of the taxes. The middle class pays all of the taxes, does all of the work. The poor are there to scare the sh*t out of the middle class! Keep them going to those jobs.”
It’s a hilarious and painfully accurate take on how capitalist society works – and highlights what we need to overcome if we’re ever going to reverse the trend.
