A newly discovered image by the Chicago Reader showing Bernie Sanders chained to Civil Rights protesters on August 13, 1963, is going viral on social media.

It has been widely reported that Sanders was arrested during his time at the University of Chicago while demonstrating in favor of civil rights for African-Americans. Although some disputed the specifics surrounding his arrest, this photograph seems to put all those doubts to rest, as it appears to depict the exact moments when he was apprehended by police officers, while chained up to others:

If we needed any further proof of Sanders’ lifelong commitment to civil rights, this is it. During his time in Chicago, he became outraged by the university’s discriminatory housing policies and was the Chairman of the UC’s chapter of the Congress for Racial Equality (CORE).

Since then, Sanders has worked tirelessly to fight for the rights and prosperity of all Americans, no matter their race or ethnicity. He was the first candidate to embrace the Black Lives Matter movement and to address the epidemic of police brutality that is afflicting our nation. He has taken a firm stance against the mass incarceration policies that create a school-to-prison pipeline that entrap thousands of African-Americans into a vicious cycle of poverty and discrimination; fought to end overly harsh drug sentencing and to protect the social safety net that keeps impoverished Americans afloat. Sanders’s record on racial justice and civil rights cannot be questioned; he’s known where the real problems are for fifty years.
