Presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump has been very vocal about his disbelief in the “hoax” of climate change, towing the Republican Party line to a tee. The GOP is utterly beholden to fossil fuel magnates like the Koch Brothers and other oligarchs in the dirty energy industry and have thus made the obstinate denial of the existence of man-made climate change a central party platform, a message that Donald Trump has gleefully embraced.
But unsurprisingly, when it comes to Trump, he takes a different attitude when it comes to his OWN investments. The Trump Golf Course in Ireland is threatened by coastal erosion, so Trump has requested a permit to…build a sea wall. Not just any sea wall – some considered proposals called for a “monster sea wall” 20 meters wide of solid limestone.
Most importantly, however, the request cites climate change as a primary reason for the wall – a shameless show of hypocrisy from a dangerously ignorant man who freely sells obviously false anti-science narratives to his supporters but then switches his tune when it’s HIS golf course at risk.
“Donald Trump clearly cares more about the fate of his golf courses than the health of the millions of families already affected by the climate crisis,” said Adam Beitman of the Sierra Club.
There is too much evidence to continue denying the existence of man-made climate change – and every day that we waste arguing over its existence is one less day we have to prepare for the coming storms. The humorous irony of Trump’s obsession with building walls to solve problems shouldn’t detract from his constant flip-flopping and inability to commit to a policy or position for longer than five minutes; such behavior indicates impulsivity and a lack of moral fortitude that is most inappropriate in a candidate for the American presidency.
