At a rally in California today, Trump called for everyone to look at “my African American.” Apparently Trump thinks that having one African American supporter at a rally makes up for the fact that he has alienated much of the African American community through racist rhetoric that keeps winning him the endorsement of more and more white supremacist groups, most notably the KKK.
Beyond Trump’s inability to appeal to any minority group, he tokenized an African American man and held him up as “his.” Trump looked at one man, and held him as a sort of mascot to prove that he really isn’t that racist. However, by treating an African American man as a useful political tool rather than as a person, Trump remains a staunch racist.
It is tragic that more than 50 years after the beginning of the Civil Rights era we have a presidential candidate who is openly, blatantly, and hatefully racist.
