The conservative right wing has been relentlessly demonizing transgender Americans and have seized on the “issue” of bathroom usage as the next front in the culture wars. It would appear that as tends to happen when radical religious zealots go all out against a certain organization or minority group, violence follows. They have crafted an entirely baseless and utterly ridiculous narrative that paints transgender Americans as sexual predators exploiting “political correctness” to victimize women in public bathrooms.
Republicans have been calling for a boycott of big-box store Target for their tolerant refusal to impose discriminatory bathroom policies or to worry about what their customer’s genitals might look like. Which makes it very suspicious that a small improvised explosive device exploded in the women’s bathroom at a Target store in Evanston, Illinois. Thankfully, no injuries were reported and the damage is minor. A 44-year-old woman is in custody for the explosion. No information about motives are available at the time.
But the symbolism is too potent to be ignored, especially considering the right wing’s propensity for political violence. Whether it’s murdering abortion doctors, vandalizing and firebombing clinics, or seizing government property, they have made it very clear that they consider violence to be an acceptable form of protest and intimidation, and it cannot be tolerated in a free and democratic society.
