Republican Mayor Anthony Silva has been arrested for providing alcohol to minors at a summer camp for at-risk youth that he runs, and playing strip poker with at least one minor and recording the incident. The 42 year old is mayor of Stockton, California. His arrest warrant cites charges of eavesdropping, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, providing alcohol to a minor and cruelty to a child by endangering health.
According to the prosecuting team, Silva provided multiple minors at his summer camp with alcohol. Investigators have also found a video on his cell phone taken during a game of strip poker with a camper. Although the video does not show the game, the audio makes clear what was happening.
This disgusting violation of “at-risk” youth comes from the supposed “party of family values.” Shockingly, the mayor’s lawyers say that he will be able to finish out the summer as director of his camp, posing a very real threat to campers. Sadly it is not enough to profess adherence to family values, and to cite your motivation to help children. The scope of these allegations, and the evidence to back them up, should immediately disqualify this man from any childcare position or position of authority over minors.
We hope that he is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for manipulating, violating, and endangering some of society’s most vulnerable. Reciting “family value” and “ethical” platitudes is utterly meaningless when all they do is serve as an excuse to prop up antiquated but discriminatory views of women and LGBTQ people, and do nothing to protect children from real threats.
