It only took the orange-faced master of disaster a single trip to Mexico to open up wounds that won’t soon heal, and one lawmaker south of the border is proposing to pass a pre-emptive strike in Mexican law which could one day trigger the beginning of Donald Trump’s Trade War. Mexican Senator Armando Rios Piter just proposed a bill which would do the following according to Reuters:
“In cases where the property/assets of (our) fellow citizens or companies are affected by a foreign government, as Donald Trump has threatened, the Mexican government should proportionally expropriate assets and properties of foreigners from that country on our territory.”
The initiative also seeks to protect Mexico against unilateral changes to the 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which Trump has threatened to ditch. Rios Piter said his aim was to counter threats by Trump to target Mexicans in the United States and to stress that the economic welfare of both nations is at stake.
“At a time like this, it’s vital for us to understand why this relationship benefits both. We’re neighbors, we’re friends, we’re partners,” he said. “He’s putting (that) at risk.”
There you have it, the Republican party’s nominee for President used his first ever attempt at diplomacy to truly anger one of America’s closest neighbors, and then return to his followers and lay down a two-faced screed of demonizing hate in the immigration debate only hours later – as if those very people in Mexico he just visited and later trashed would not be watching closely.
It was an epic failure.
Donald Trump has sunk in the polls like a rock this summer, got desperate then pulled an immigration policy ‘Hamlet’, by wandering around and waffling on his get tough immigration policies – which all polling and reason indicates is sinking his general election campaign – talking about “the softening” until flying into the belly of the very beast which haunts him. There in Mexico, he lied about his meeting in an unplanned public moment, causing an international incident.
President Enrique Peña Nieto of Mexico sent a tweet calling Donald Trump out for lying on the podium, while he flew to Arizona to give his big “immigration policy speech” this week, when as the Wall Street Journal revealed that Trump only added his insulting claim that Mexico would pay for his cockamamie wall in direct response to the Mexican President’s tweet.
Leading Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton called out Trump for PRECISELY this kind of childish behavior in her well received Democratic National Convention speech, long before Trump’s desperate attempt at looking diplomatic, when she said a month ago:
“A man you can bait with a tweet, is not a man we can trust with nuclear weapons.”
Republicans used to be the party of free commerce, but under Trump’s erratic guidance, they’ve become massive proponents of state intervention into the $500 billion dollar bilateral trade between America and Mexico, and now they’re about to cost millions of Americans their jobs, and higher prices for basic household goods, all in the name of sounding tough and acting foolish abroad.
