During tonight’s “Commander-and-Chief” forum, Republican nominee and false patriot Donald Trump insulted the President of the United States and the very office he is aspiring to when he began openly praising the dictator of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin.
“The man has very strong control over a country. Now, it’s a very different system and I don’t happen to like the system, but certainly in that system, he’s been a leader. Far more than our president has been a leader. I think I would have a very, very good relationship with Putin. I think I would have a very, very good relationship with Russia.”
In one fell swoop, Trump attacked President Barack Obama and proclaimed that he would be very, very, good friends with a strongarm tyrant who murders journalists in his own country and whose airstrikes slaughtered 2,000 Syrians in just six months; a man who oppresses and actively encourages discrimination against LGBT Russians and throttles the freedom of expression while he and his oligarch friends pillage the country for all its worth.
Being a greedy and heartless narcissist himself, it’s clear why Trump would find Putin’s rule to be appealing – but the implications for our country’s national security and for the development of democracy across the world at large are very disturbing. Russia is one of our largest rivals that is behaving increasingly aggressive towards our allies in Eastern Europe; the Putin regime brings chaos, tyranny, and murder wherever it treads.
For Republicans to be silent as their nominee insults our commander-in-chief while praising our enemies is the height of hypocrisy. Conservatives threw a tantrum when a football player refused to stand for the anthem, but don’t have anything to say when Trump insults our servicemen in Europe who have spent the past seventy years guarding the free world from Russian authoritarianism.
They are false patriots, who voraciously defend the flag when it suits them but have spent the past eight years slandering one of the greatest presidents our nation has ever seen simply because he is a black Democrat. It makes sense, then, that they would nominate an open traitor for President.
