The tone of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s rhetoric has turned from that of a carnival barker to one of a doomsday preacher. His refusal to pledge to accept the outcome of the presidential election is unprecedented in all of American history. Trump’s supporters have taken his refusal to mean they should prepare for end-of-the-world scenarios, including a race war.
One such supporter, a self-described “Christian soldier” named Jim Moseley, first came to the public’s attention in mid-February when he was interviewed outside of a Christian bookstore in North Carolina while shopping for a birthday card. When asked why he supported Trump Moseley said, “We all fall short. I’m a Christian, and I say a cuss word every now and then. I get angry. He just happens to say what we all want to say, what we all feel. And that’s why we like him so much. Because he speaks our feelings.”
The interaction with Moseley by “The Star” in Toronto led the publication to follow him on Facebook. Now the individual who appeared civil but misinformed has turned to using dangerously hostile rhetoric that matches that of Trump. Moseley recently wrote of his vision of America if Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton wins the election:
Once the trucks stop rolling, the grocery shelves will go empty and gasoline rationing will go into effect. Liberals will have targets on their backs, as their behaviors are pretty much evident … race wars will begin as well, as your skin color will be your uniform!
The Trump campaign will not acknowledge supporters like Moseley, just like they refuse to acknowledge the Ku Klux Klan’s endorsement, but that does nothing to quell the very real itch towards violence many of Trump’s supporters feel.
With the presidential election less than three weeks away, which Clinton is leading nationally by as much as 12 points, it appears inevitable for Trump to take the long walk of shame back to his golden tower. If he refuses to concede to the will of the American people there is little he can do in a legal sense beyond call for a recount. However, Trump can incite violence through his supporters who are already looking for a fight and he requires no official title to accomplish such a feat. This is all the more reason to stand against Trump, as his brand of politics grows more dangerous by the hour.
