Many have been wondering if Donald Trump actually wants to govern the country. It’s a legitimate question, seeing as he told a potential vice-presidential candidate that he would be in charge of policy while Trump would be in charge of “making America great again,” or considering that Trump can’t be bothered to attend his own intelligence briefings while he can find the time to fly around the country and hold hate rallies.
Which makes it very curious indeed for production company MGM to announce that Trump will be continuing to serve as an executive producer on the New Celebrity Apprentice and will be paid per-episode, likely at least five figures for each eight episodes. Whether or not he will actually be taking part in the day-to-day creation of the show is still unknown, but knowing Trump, it’s going to be hard for him to stay away.
Complicating matters though is the fact that NBC cut ties with him shortly after his announcement speech in which he referred to Mexicans as “rapists;” the countless testimonies from former Apprentice contestants about his constant sexual predations, casual racism, and general abuse may also throw a wrench into his plans to continue producing reality television. While there is a precedent for a President to collect royalties while in office, a president has never been on the payroll of an entertainment company that happens to own several news outlets as well. The potential for conflicts of interest is enormous.
Either way, given the frequency with which he engages in Twitter feuds and lashes out against his critics, he’ll certainly be creating drama of his own if he actually takes the White House. Except this will be the kind that could kill us all.
