President Barack Obama was recently a guest on “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah.” During a one on one interview Obama confirmed that the Russian government did help Donald Trump win the presidency, but made it clear that the media failed to do its job by obsessing over Hillary’s emails instead of focusing on the REAL story — the Russian interference in our political system in favor of Trump.
What I think everybody has to reflect on is what is it about our political ecosystem, what is it about the state of our democracy where the leaks of what were, frankly, not very interesting emails, that didn’t have any explosive information ended up an obsession. And the fact that the Russians were doing this was not an obsession? This was not a secret running up to the election. The President-elect in some of his political events, specifically said to the Russians, “Hack Hillary’s emails so we can find out what’s going on so we can confirm our conspiracy theories!”
You had what was very clear relationships between members of the president-elect’s campaign team and the Russians and a professed shared view on a bunch of issues. The real question I think we all have to reflect on is what’s happened to our political system when emails that were hacked and released ended up being the overwhelming story and the constant source of coverage, breathless coverage, that was depicted as somehow damning in all sorts of ways? When the truth of the matter was it was, apparently, routine stuff.
The President couldn’t be more right, and his comments come on the heels of a widely publicized report by the Central Intelligence Agency that agrees. The findings, which Trump said are “ridiculous”, provided conclusive proof that the Russian government-employed hackers to break into both the Democratic and Republican party email servers. However, only information from the Democratic side was leaked, where as Republicans were given a free pass.
Why wasn’t THAT the topic of discussion in the email-obsessed media?
President Obama knows the American people were bamboozled, but there is little that he can do now. The election is over, and unless an unprecedented revolt happens during the electoral college Donald Trump will be inaugurated as the 45th President of the United States in a little over a month. That is a frightening thought, and it is also reality.
