The world stood paralyzed in fear watching on in horror as Donald Trump was inaugurated as the 45th President of the United States. Trump gave the customary inauguration speech where he laid out a dark and bleak description of the present state of America and vowed to turn the entire ship around while offering no specifics as to how he planned to accomplish this gargantuan feat.
Trump’s speech was covered by MSNBC host Chris Matthews who previously has been no fan of the newly minted president. Matthews once suggested Trump would execute his own son-in-law. After Trump’s speech concluded Matthews compared it to one which would have been given by the murderous German dictator Adolph Hitler. After Trump finished his speech Matthews offered the following analysis:
He said today, ‘America first.’ It was not just the racial-—I shouldn’t say racial–I should say Hitlerian—background to it. The message I keep thinking is: What does Theresa May (United Kingdom Prime Minster) think of this when she picks up the paper and says, ‘Oh my God, what did he just say? He said America first. What happened to the special relationship?’ What if you’re Putin? You’re probably pounding the table, saying, ‘That’s what I’ve been saying! Russia first!
A favorite and apt comparison of Trump has been to that of Hitler as both figures rose to power using hostile populist rhetoric. Hitler tragically demonized a religious group which cost the lives of millions around the globe and Trump has voewd to do the same when he promised to “eradicate radical Islam” from the face of the Earth.
The rhetoric by Trump has opened the door of pensive fear. The world will wait whilst holding its breath to see how Trump will behave now that he has seized the ultimate seat of power in the world. One hopes that Matthews is incorrect and that Trump will not take the same steps as Hitler, but that may be a fool’s hope as it has already been widely reported that when Trump is laying in bed at night he reads books written by Hitler himself. That is surely a comforting thought.
