President Donald Trump has been sworn in as the next leader of this nation, and he’s already violating his oath to the Constitution. Trump still has not filed the paperwork needed to transfer control of his business empire to his sons, as he has publicly promised to do multiple times. “My two sons, who are right here, Don and Eric, are going to be running the company. They are going to be running it in a very professional manner. They’re not going to discuss it with me” said Trump at a recent press conference.
But it seems Trump won’t even follow through on that move, which the Congressional Ethics Office has already lambasted as “wholly inadequate.” He is currently in violation of the emoluments clause of the Constitution, which prevents the president or federal official from accepting “any present, emolument, office, or title, of any kind whatever, from any king, prince, or foreign state.”
By not divesting himself from his businesses, Trump’s businesses automatically becomes a pay-for-play corruption vehicle by which foreign governments can influence Trump’s behavior by providing generous “donations” or otherwise spending heavily at his businesses – a fact not lost on foreign actors, who have been flocking to his Washington Hotel in order to curry favor with the corrupter-in-chief.
Whether or not Republicans in Congress are willing to defend the Constitution they claim to love so dearly when it suits them is another question entirely. Expect absolutely no action to be made as the spineless hypocrites salivate at the thought of taking a butcher’s cleaver to the federal budget and ignore Trump’s conflicts of interests entirely. Our devolution into a oligarchal plutocracy is already well underway.
