Republicans in Congress, exuberant at their resounding victories in the 2016 election and having control of all three branches of government, are being dragged back down to earth in a big way.
It turns out the legislation that they’ve been chomping at the bit to pass are wildly unpopular with the vast majority of Americans. In particular, their efforts to “repeal and replace” Obamacare – which is proving to be much more difficult than they expected – are being met with loud cries of protest from the millions of Americans who rely on the landmark legislation for their health insurance.
Faced with mobs of protesters wherever they go, Republicans have taken to holding secret meetings where they train younger members how to protect themselves from Obamacare protesters, reports POLITICO.
Their recommendations include
- having a physical exit strategy
- installing a backdoor in congressional offices to slip out of
- having local police monitor town halls
- replacing any glass office door entrances with heavy doors and deadbolts
- setting up intercoms to ensure those entering congressional offices are there for appointments
Faced with the option of listening to the protesters and actually representing the interests of their constituents instead of their corporate backers, these craven frauds are instead discussing ways they can dodge the consequences of their actions and block out the demands of the people.
“The message was: One, be careful for security purposes. Watch your back. And two, be receptive. Honor the First Amendment, engage, be friendly, be nice. Because it is toxic out there right now. Even some of the guys who have been around here a lot longer than I have, have never seen it to this level.” said Republican Study Committee Chairman Mark Walker (R-N.C.).
That’s because we have never had a president so corrupt and so morally repugnant. There’s never been a president who has violated the Constitution and defiled the values our nation was founded on so openly – and we’ve never seen an entire political party bend over backward to accommodate an insecure would-be dictator and his ham-fisted scheme to unravel our democracy. We’ve never seen our elected legislators show such callous and obvious disregard for the will of their constitutents in favor of their corporate sponsors.
Rep. McClintock (R-CA) had to be escorted away by police last week when protesters mobbed his town hall. Rep. Martha McSally (R-AZ) was berated by protesters as she left her office on Tuesday. Thousands rallied outside congressional offices on January 15th across the nation to protest Obamacare repeal attempts.
It is absolutely disgraceful that House Republicans treat their constituents with such disdain they plan on how to avoid them instead of actually listening to them. But it is a sure sign that protests work – and the Republican Party is beginning to get very, very nervous.
So get your signs ready and find out where your congresspeople’s offices are. It’s going to be a long four years, and we cannot allow them to escape the consequences of their actions.
