Tonight, a CNN townhall will air featuring Van Jones and Bill Maher. A preview has been revealed and it shows Maher taking on a Donald Trump supporter with a brutally effective rant. The supporter stood up and demanded to know why Maher and other detractors are being so harsh on the new president.
He complained, “The president has been in office barely three weeks. Why can’t you guys in the media and Hollywood give him some slack?”
Maher quickly retorted, “Because of what he’s done!”
“But it’s only been three weeks!” the supporter replied. That was enough to set Maher off.
“It’s a giant con, what he’s done! He ran for the ‘little man.’ And then what does he do? He gets into office, the coal companies can dump sludge in the river. Because, you know, that’s what the ‘little man’ is aching for. Undoing Dodd-Frank, because so many of the town halls in Appalachia, people were standing up and saying, ‘Mr. Trump, please get rid of the Volcker Rule, because if I can’t make certain speculative investments, it’s killing us here!'” exclaimed Maher.
Maher went on to attack Trump’s general personality and temperament, arguing that Trump as a person is woefully unfit to be president. He impatiently explained, “It’s beyond politics, it’s about sanity. It’s about somebody who makes stuff up, who doesn’t read. His information is either anecdotal, or pulled out of his… behind”
Maher reprimanded the Trump supporter, saying that a president who lies about everything from voter fraud to inaugural crowd sizes “should bother you.”
We are looking forward to seeing Maher take down more abysmal pro-Trump arguments, and desperately hope that he will get through to at least one Trump supporter tonight. He speaks the truth boldly and with clarity, something that our president refuses to do.
