The organizers of the Washington D.C. Women’s March are organizing a general strike called “A Day Without Women” that is set to take place on March 8, International Women’s Day. The Women’s March took place the day after Donald Trump’s inauguration as a protest of Trump’s bigoted rhetoric, history of sexual harassment, and anti-women policies, among other causes. It became the largest protest in American history with between 3 and 4 million marchers in cities across the country.

The Day Without Women will highlight the critical roles that women play in all areas of society. Women still play a disproportionately large role in household work, childcare, and caring for relatives; but they also work in every sector and represented (although often underrepresented) at every job level. If women all take the day off, America will stop.
On March 8th, International Women’s Day, let’s unite again in our communities for A Day Without A Woman. #DayWithoutAWoman

In America, women’s reproductive rights are under threat from Republican officials at all levels of government. Women are not adequately represented in government and are concentrated in lower paying professions.

Globally, women are still shamefully undervalued. Sex-selective abortions occur because many people across the world still believe that women are worth less than men. In many developing countries girls are more likely to drop out of school than boys because their educations are seen as less valuable.

It is time to make a bold statement showing the world how important women are by giving a brief glimpse of what a world without women would look like.
