Trump Just Attacked Chicago For Crime Rates. Chicago PD’s Response Is Perfect

Trump has done nothing to address Chicago’s violence and the city police department is calling him out for it. In spite of Trump’s tweets and statements, which have drawn attention to the gang-related issues within the city, Trump has not actually reached out to Chicago in any substantial way—tweeting does not count, Mr. President.

Eddie Johnson, the Chicago Superintendent of Police, commented on the administration’s neglect in a statement yesterday, explaining that although he and the police force have asked Trump for help in dealing with the problems of Chicago, the President has not even responded.

“We have challenges with gun violence in several neighborhoods on the South and West sides of the city. It’s unacceptable to me, to the Mayor and to Everyone who lives in Chicago,” exclaimed Johnson.

He went on to detail what Trump could be doing but is not:

“We’ve made requests to the White House and the Justice Department for them to support our work — from increasing federal gun prosecution to more FBI, DEA and ATF agents to more funding for mentoring, job training and more. We are still waiting for the administration’s response to our request.”

This is despicable, but it perfectly exemplifies the administration’s ethos. They exploit real problems harming the American people for the sake of rhetoric, but do nothing to actually provide relief for those affected. All Trump and his cohorts are capable of is giving each other tax breaks, regardless of what’s really happening in the country they have been elected to govern.

Trump has shown a particular interest in Chicago, but again, this is all superficial—he is not really going to help the city. The concept of “help” is beyond him both as the President and as a man.

Yesterday, Trump yet again publicly  Twitter following horrendous violence in the city, “Seven people shot and killed yesterday in Chicago. What is going on there – totally out of control. Chicago needs help!”

If Chicago needs help, then, as the President of the United States, Donald Trump should actually do something to help. This is not Trump’s first mention of Chicago.

On January 24th, Trump tweeted “If Chicago doesn’t fix the horrible ‘carnage’ going on, 228 shootings in 2017 with 42 killings (up 24% from 2016), I will send in the Feds!”

The Mayor, Rahm Emanuel, has been very clear that he is not opposed to this federal assistance, previously stating, “A lot of the guns, you know, coming into Chicago come from out of state,” Emanuel said. “Federal entities are set up to deal with that. And they do. And they work with us.”

And yet, despite Chicago’s embrace of federal support and Trump’s strangely aggressive threat to provide it, nothing.

Now the Police Dept. of Chicago has also weighed in on the complete disregard of the administration. Trump needs to stand by his policies that might actually benefit the people of America instead of harming them—there’s no need to hunt human beings down simply because they weren’t born here.

He should his branch’s money where his mouth is regarding Chicago, where federal assistance would help save lives, and where the Mayor and police are doing everything they can to procure Trump’s attention to their needs. Of course, all Trump can do is turn a blind eye and a Twitter finger to the problem.
