The Donald Trump administration has admitted that yesterday it deliberately gave false information to media outlets to trick them into giving President Trump positive coverage in the hours before his Joint Session address to Congress.
A high-ranking White House official told the press that Trump was softening on immigration and was going to provide a pathway to citizenship for many undocumented immigrants.
This big shift created a swarm of stories in major media outlets. Inevitably, when Trump stood in front of Congress and the nation, he just repeated his same lines demonizing immigrants and vowing to fix America by cracking down on immigration – a totally nonsensical solution to our problems.
CNN’s Sarah Murray explains,
“He had this meeting with the anchors, he talked about a path to legal status. Basically they fed us things that they thought these anchors would like, that they thought would give them positive press coverage for the next few hours. A senior administration official admitted that it was a misdirection play.
“When the president was actually out there speaking to the American public [in the Joint Session address], he didn’t talk about a path to legal status.
“He talked about reforming the legal immigration system so it’s merit-based. That means fewer low-skilled workers, fewer people coming on family ties, more people coming on high-skilled visas. That is still closer to a Stephen Miller and Steve Bannon framework of the world than Gang of Eight, who pushed comprehensive immigration reform.”
Trump’s war on the press has gone beyond insulting, undermining, avoiding, and black-listing the media. Now, he is lying and using media outlets as unwitting parrots of his administration’s lies.
Not all media members were fooled, however:

We hear it said day after day, but the adage “We now live in the era of fake news” still hasn’t fully sunk in. No source is trustworthy anymore, and it’s now hard to tell if we can trust the media to report accurately if they fawn over Trump every time he goes two hours without making some kind of horrifically insensitive gaffe.
