Former National Security Agency (NSA) analyst John Schindler sent out a mysterious tweet on Monday alleging an anti-media conspiracy between the Donald Trump team and the Russian state.
Learned fm very reliable IC sources that Trump WH, w/help fm Russian intel, is targeting US journalists. Rough road ahead. Get ready, peeps
— John Schindler (@20committee) March 7, 2017
Schindler cites “very reliable” sources from the U.S. intelligence community who informed him that Russian intelligence has teamed up Trump’s White House to target journalists. It is unclear exactly what he means by targeting. This could be anything from hacking journalists and news organizations to framing them for illicit conduct.
The White House has already been caught once planting a fake story to smear a critical journalist. POLITICO published a story written by Alex Isenstadt and Annie Karni that reported that White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer berated a deputy communications director until she cried.
In less than seven hours a story appeared in the right wing fake-news outlet The Washington Examiner alleging that Isenstadt laughed at the death of Navy SEAL Ryan Owens. Owens lost his life in a disastrous counterterrorism raid in Yemen that Trump authorized despite having insufficient intelligence.
POLITICO editor Carrie Budoff Brown said she is certain that the White House was trying to start a smear campaign to falsely discredit one of her journalists.
It is not clear precisely what Schindler is referring to or what hard evidence there is to back it up. What is clear is that the anti-press sentiment of the Administration is already deeply disturbing.
It has already invented fake-news to smear a journalist. Trump has called the media “the enemy of the American people.” The President constantly tweets about the “fake news media,” by which he means the mainstream media outlets who don’t report his favorite baseless conspiracy theories.
Russia has a long track-record of controlling media with an iron fist. Could Trump have joined the Western arm of the Kremlin’s fascist operation? New revelations about the Trump-Russia scandal are emerging at least weekly, so there may be details coming soon. Only time will tell.
