President Donald Trump and his administration continue to sit on their hands as yet another week brings another string of bomb threats against Jewish centers around the nation, including three days straight of threats in New York City that include a Jewish Community Centers (JCC), and the Jewish Children’s Museum on Thursday morning.
“There’s a big target. Thousands of Jews come here all the time,” said David Shalom, the editor of the museum’s children’s magazine. The NYPD diverted Shalom away from the building Thursday morning as he arrived for work, closing down nearby streets as they investigated the threat.
On Tuesday a bomb threat was called into the Midtown headquarters of the Anti-Defamation League, and the Staten Island JCC received two threats this week.
“ADL is not intimidated,” said ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt. “This only hardens our resolve to fight against anti-Semitism.”
Since January, more than 140 hoax bomb threats have been called or emailed into Jewish centers and synagogues around the country in what is now six waves of threats.
President Trump has taken no action to help stop the attacks, offering only insincere condemnations. Spicer added that the administration would “continue to condemn them and look at ways to stop them.”
Fed up with waiting for the president to take action, all 100 sitting US Senators signed a letter on Tuesday asking for help from top US law enforcement officials.
“We are concerned that the number of incidents is accelerating and failure to address and deter these threats will place innocent people at risk and threaten the financial viability of JCCs,” the letter said.
One arrest has been made in connection to a handful of the hoaxes, a former journalist has been charged with using a fake email account to pose as his ex-girlfriend. Authorities do not believe he is responsible for the bulk of the threats.
Trump and his administration have stayed focused on fighting the nonexistent threat of “radical Islamic terrorism” as Trump signed a second unconstitutional Muslim travel ban on Monday, barring Muslims from six countries from entering the US, but Trump has done nothing to curb the wave of anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim bigotry throughout the country. This bigotry that has led to the deaths of multiple Indian-born immigrants.
While all the threats have so far been hoaxes, the administration’s failure to act now will only serve to embolden those terrorizing the Jewish community and could likely result in an escalation in tactics that would end with countless Jews, including many children at JCC facilities losing their lives.
