The sudden pressure on the Republican Party to begin producing results after their shocking upset in the 2016 election is putting Congressmen in some uncomfortable positions – and they aren’t handling the stress well.
Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX) just revealed how he really feels about his voters in an exchange at a recent town hall. A citizen upset at Barton’s past refusal to support legislation protecting women from domestic violence politely asked his Congressman that he promise to work with Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-CA) on a bipartisan bill to help prevent violence against women.
Barton gave the catch-all Republican excuse: “On the first bill that I voted against, that’s a true statement, and I voted against it because I think that’s a state issue, not a federal issue.”
Referring it as a “state’s issue” is the laziest cop-out in the book – and enormously hypocritical, since Republicans always cry “state’s issue” on uncomfortable subjects. But when it comes to issues like a woman’s right to choose, or the decriminalization of marijuana, the GOP is all too willing to dictate from Washington.
Barton’s constituents began to angrily complain about his careless effort to dodge the question. “That is an issue that impacts everyone, everywhere, not only in this country but everywhere” yelled one man before Barton pointed at him and said, “YOU SIR, SHUT UP!”
This only prompted more outrage and fury from the crowd. “What is that? You don’t tell anybody to shut up. You work for us!” said one angry voter.
The sheer arrogance and the utter disdain that Republicans show for their constituents has never been more prominently displayed than in the town halls that the more courageous politicians have deigned to hold with their voters.
This is what they really think of the American people. Republicans have spent far too long in their ivory tower on Capitol Hill, comfortable in their gerrymandered districts and never being held accountable for their actions. Now that they control the government, they are about to have an unpleasant awakening – and the American people will see them for who they really are.
