Despite claiming she would take no official role in the White House, Ivanka Trump is the latest Trump family member to set up shop at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
Since Melania Trump is still using taxpayers’ dollars to live in New York, many believe that Ivanka is taking over for Melania, albeit in an “unofficial” capacity. Politico reported that Ivanka will serve as her father’s “eyes and ears” and offer advice, but won’t have an actual position title nor will she receive a salary.
Since she will not technically be a government employee, there are concerns that she won’t be subject to the same ethics rules as actual advisers, especially given the slew of new conflicts-of-interest that will arise. Her attorney, Jamie Gorelick, tried to assuage those concerns:
“Our view is that the conservative approach is for Ivanka to voluntarily comply with the rules that would apply if she were a government employee, even though she is not.”
Well, as long as she voluntarily agreed, seems pretty foolproof!
“The one thing I would like to be clear on: we don’t believe it eliminates conflicts in every way. She has the conflicts that derive from the ownership of this brand. We’re trying to minimize those to the extent possible.”
With the addition of Ivanka Trump to the White House, the Trump administration will embroil itself even further into an already unprecedented degree of self-enrichment. She has already been in hot water for having her brands promoted from the White House; now that she’ll be on the second floor of the West Wing, there’s no telling what she will do to further line her pockets.
