Now that Director James Comey has confirmed that the FBI has been investigating the Trump campaign for months, statements that he made about Hillary Clinton are coming full circle. (Watch the clip below.)
On the Saturday before Election Day, after Clinton had already been cleared by the FBI (again), Trump told a rally that being “the prime suspect in a massive, far-reaching criminal investigation… will make it virtually impossible for her to govern or lead our country.”
Later that day, his prepared statement to a Nevada crowd asserted that, because of the investigation, “if she were to win, it would create an unprecedented constitutional crisis. In that situation, we could very well have a sitting President under felony indictment and, ultimately, a criminal trial.”
Trump was not alone in making statements that have proved both ironic and damning. Kellyanne Conway made similar (if snarkier) comments:
And Trump’s most popular Fox News brown-noser summed up the situation perfectly, man-splaining that the President “could be sworn into office while still being under investigation from the FBI, which would then put this country into a major Constitutional crisis.”

In an alternate reality Trump and his lackeys would hold him to the same standard as Clinton, but no one is under the illusion that any of them will show anything close to that much integrity. We should expect to hear that the FBI investigating a sitting President for colluding with a foreign power to influence an election is “no big deal” as they try to divert our attention to their next self-made disaster.
Of course, that’s nonsense. The FBI investigating the crimes of a President is a YUGE deal. On that point, Trump and his team was right. Just don’t expect them to admit it.
