Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD), the ranking member of the House’s Select Committee on Benghazi, knows exactly what kind of tricks Republicans get up to – and he’s appalled by the latest stunt that Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA), the Chair of the House Intelligence Committee, has pulled to muddy the waters surrounding the Trump-Russia investigation.
Appearing with CNN’s Chris Cuomo on New Day, Cummings had some harsh words for his colleague and demanded an investigation into him as well.
“I was the ranking member of the Benghazi committee, and we would have never allowed that to happen. The Intelligence panel is a very special committee. They are privileged to information that most members of Congress may never see and so you expect them to be extremely confidential. What he did was basically to go to the president, who’s being investigated, by the FBI and others and by the intelligence committee, to give them information.”
Cummings is referring to yesterday’s bizarre decision by Nunes to hold a press conference – without consulting any of his fellow committee members – and announce that the FBI does in fact have surveillance reports on the Trump team that were obtained legally through FISA warrants – confirming that the Trump team was in communication with foreign agents.
But the important part of that conference was the announcement that Nunes would be heading to the White House afterwards to hand over all the evidence to the subject of the investigation – Trump and his team.
“Basically, what he has done is he has scuttled and put a cloud over his own investigation and he has become the subject basically, he should be, of an investigation. It’s a real problem” railed Cummings.
The Representative from Maryland is absolutely right. Nunes’ behavior clearly indicates that he is taking orders from the White House and sabotaging the investigation that he is supposed to be leading over partisanship and self-preservation.
We need an independent prosecutor and a special committee to get to the bottom of this, and when this is all over, the collaborators and enablers of treason like Rep. Nunes, Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) and Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) all need to follow the President and his staff into federal prison.
