Rick Perry, the Secretary of Energy of the United States of America, just published an editorial in the Houston Chronicle suggesting that the election of 21-year-old Bobby Brooks, an openly gay student, as Texas A&M student body president is “a mockery of due process and transparency” and a “quest for diversity.”
Perry, a 67-year-old man who is heading a Department that he previously wanted to eliminate, wrote his 850-word op-ed just days after his alma mater elected Brooks. Per NBC:
“Brooks lost the popular vote but won the election after his opponent, Robert McIntosh, was disqualified by the student government and the university’s judicial court based on reports that his campaign didn’t provide receipts for glow sticks used in a campaign video.”
Somehow, the irony of a candidate who lost the popular vote but won on a technicality escapes Perry completely, as he even went as far as to suggest that voter intimidation was also a factor in Brooks’ victory.
Texas A&M pushed back on Perry’s misguided interference, claiming that McIntosh’s disqualifications “represents the school’s commitment to accountability.”
Amy Smith, spokesperson for Texas A&M, continued:

“To suggest that the same decision of disqualification would not have been made if the roles were reversed is to deny the Texas A&M of today where accountability applies to all.”
Sarah Kate Ellis, president of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation hit back perfectly with these tweets:
It takes a lot of nerve for 67 year old @SecretaryPerry to bully a college junior for fairly winning an election #TXLege https://t.co/Ulu2h0yqcW

Some advice for @SecretaryPerry: Kids like Bobby Brooks are the future, and should be encouraged, not harassed. #TXLege
