The Los Angeles Times’ editorial board took aim at President Trump and his “unpredictable” and “reckless” behavior today in a powerful new editorial titled “Our Dishonest President.”
Slamming Trump for everything from his misguided and backwards policies to his childlike temperament and calling on citizens and lawmakers to fight back, the editors concluded that “nothing prepared us for the magnitude of this trainwreck.”
In its scathing and comprehensive rebuke of President Trump’s abhorrent agenda the editorial took aim at Trump’s unprecedented assault on the independence of the judiciary, his warped healthcare policy that would kill tens of thousands, and his shocking regression on environmental issues.
“In a matter of weeks” the editors wrote, “President Trump has taken dozens of real-life steps that, if they are not reversed, will rip families apart, foul rivers and pollute the air, intensify the calamitous effects of climate change and profoundly weaken the system of American public education for all. These are immensely dangerous developments which threaten to weaken this country’s moral standing in the world, imperil the planet and reverse years of slow but steady gains by marginalized or impoverished Americans.”
The article also included an exhortation for lawmakers and voters alike to do everything they can to hold the president accountable and uphold the sanctity of the truth.
“Voters must turn out for elections. Members of Congress — including and especially Republicans — must find the political courage to stand up to Trump,” the editors wrote. “Courts must safeguard the Constitution. State legislators must pass laws to protect their citizens and their policies from federal meddling.”
The editorial concluded with a promise to its readers, and to the American public at large, to continue exposing the truth of this disastrous presidency in spite of the administration’s scandalous assaults on the free press.
The paper announced it would focus specifically on three of President Trump’s most unsavory characteristics: his “shocking lack of respect” for institutions, his “utter lack of regard” for the truth, and his “scary willingness” to make himself a platform for alt-right conspiracy theories and hate-mongering.
Each of these three subjects, the editors announced, would be covered in a series of detailed editorials to be published the first three days of this week. We look forward to reading them.
