Yesterday, the soft drink company Pepsi triggered a firestorm of social media outrage after unveiling one of the most tone-deaf faux-progressive advertising campaigns to ever see the light of day.
The ad, featuring celebrity and model Kendall Jenner, shows a milquetoast “protest” where an obviously multicultural crowd holds vague, inoffensive signs while Jenner “daps” her Pepsi with a black man before handing it to a police officer in a clear mockery of the Black Lives Matter movement.
The daughter of civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. took to Twitter to offer a sarcastic condemnation of the ad:
The trivialization of Black Lives Matter and the gigantic anti-Trump protests that have been rocking the nation by the Pepsi corporation is one of the biggest corporate blunders made so far this year, and Bernice King is absolutely right to criticize it.
