Today, Attorney General Jeff Sessions threatened to withhold federal funding from nine cities that have refused to comply with his invasive anti-immigrant demands, and he was particularly hard on New York City.
“New York City continues to see gang murder after gang murder, the predictable consequence of the city’s ‘soft on crime’ stance,” Sessions claimed.
Naturally, the people of the Big Apple were not pleased by the accusation, in part because it is wholly untrue as evidenced by this chart of yearly murders in this century:
The murder rate in New York City has dropped by nearly half since Rudy Giuliani left Gracie Mansion at the end of 2001, and instances of the seven most serious felonies have dropped by 37%. In Mayor Bill de Blasio’s words, “We did not become the safest big city in America by being ‘soft on crime.'”
The Mayor responded to Trump with a scathing series of tweets, daring the President to face the NYPD officers he’d insulted:
If President Trump believes it, then I invite him to come to NYC, look our officers in the eye and tell them they're soft on crime.

I want to express my thanks to the men and women of the NYPD for what they have achieved in making this the safest big city in America.

NYPD Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill also had a strong message for the Trump and his cronies:
Today's @TheJusticeDept statement is unbelievably disrespectful to the hardworking #NYPD cops who fight crime and keep people safe everyday. pic.twitter.com/5F9EfvddgF

The deliberate distortion of facts and attack on hard-working public servants is just the latest reminder that there is no depth too low for the Trump regime to sink in pursuit of their reckless agenda. Thankfully, there is no shortage of good people ready to stand up and fight back.
