Today, news broke that the House Oversight Committee claimed that former national security adviser Mike Flynn may indeed have broken the law by receiving payments from Russia and Turkey. FOX News’ host Shepard Smith said that the White House looks like it is engaged in a “cover up.”
When asked to provide the House Oversight Committee with documents related to Mike Flynn, the White House did not comply. Elijah Cummings (D-MD), the ranking democrat on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, said:
“Despite all of these very troubling developments…we received a response from the White House refusing to provide any of the documents we requested.”
Smith, appearing quite baffled on his program on FOX News, said of the White House’s position:
“The situation is unprecedented. Never in American history has a man so close to the president, on his cabinet, the national security advisor no less, been accused of committing a crime by taking money from a foreign entity, much less one connected to the Russians… At the core of all this is the Russians interfered with our elections. General Flynn received money through an entity that was from the Russians. And what they want to know is was there collusion? The White House at least is giving the appearance, according to these congressional leaders, of a lack of cooperation, which could give an overall appearance that they’re trying to cover something up. Why not quit with all the semantic juggling and stuff and get to the bottom of this as quickly as possible?”
The Trump campaign is currently under FBI investigation for possibly colluding with the Russians to influence the 2016 Presidential election. Multiple members of Trump’s transition team and cabinet have been exposed for their ties to Russia.
With even FOX News stating that the White House’s lack of transparency on the Russia issue seems like a cover up, Trump’s house of cards seems to be falling with each passing day. The conservative news outlet – often a mouthpiece for Republican government officials – is undoubtedly attempting to distance itself from the beleaguered President before he drags the rest of the party down with him. Kudos to Shep Smith for calling out the President’s treasonous activities and putting country over party.
