Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) blasted Donald Trump’s proposal to reform the tax code today as another giveaway to the President and his super rich backers while doing nothing to help middle-class Americans.
“He would slash taxes for himself and his billionaire friends and significantly increase the deficit,” Sanders said in a statement, “while doing little to help rebuild the collapsing middle class.”
Sander’s said the system is already “rigged” to help the rich and this would not help provide help to those who really need it.
“At a time when we have a rigged economy designed to benefit the wealthiest Americans and large corporations,” said Sanders, “President Trump’s new tax plan would only make that system worse.”
Trump’s tax plan would take away all of the tax write-offs for individuals except the home mortgage and for charitable deduction allowances while relieving the rich of the estate tax which they have long railed against, among other things.
Sanders was joined by the Democratic leaders of the House and Senate in condemning Trump’s tax plan as laid out in a one-page document distributed today. Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said it was a “wish list for billionaires.”
“The same Trickle Down Economics that undermined the middle class are alive and well in the President’s tax plan,” Pelosi said in a statement. “True to form, President Trump’s tax plan is short on details and long on giveaways to big corporations and billionaires.”
Senator Chuck Schumer, the minority leader, predicted Trump’s plan would make “life easier for the wealthy and special interests” but “harder for middle-class and lower-class Americans.”
Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Ca) also blasted Trump’s plan. He called it “voodoo economics on steroids.”
Under Trump’s plan, the tax rate for corporations would be slashed from the current 35 percent to 15 percent, which Trump insists will boost economic growth and activity.
Sanders, as well as leading Democrats, clearly do not agree:
“Rather than making large profitable corporations – many of which pay nothing in federal income tax – finally contribute their fair share. Trump wants to give them a huge tax break.”
Once again Sanders, who ran for President in the primaries as a Democrat, is standing up for individuals and the middle class at a time Trump is rolling back past reforms and doing fulfilling the big corporations and rich people’s wish list. Candidate Trump promised to help the middle class, but his tax bill shows he was lying about that like so many other things.
Sanders continues to be a fair and reasoned voice in the face of the madness that has overtaken the U.S. government under the Trump administration. He is dedicated to trying to help all Americans, not just the richest few.
The shame is that nobody at the White House will listen.
