Trump’s virulent anti-intellectualism has made him countless enemies within the tech community. Silicon Valley just escalated their war on the Trump Regime be releasing a “Tech Pledge,” a list of crucial values that they believe are diametrically opposed to Trump’s destructive agenda.
The pledge commits the tech signatories to defending the privacy of digital user data, and declares them as supporters of immigration.
The former promise is key if Trump’s authoritarian inclinations lead him to more invasive surveillance of American citizens, the latter is a clear challenge to Trump’s xenophobic rhetoric and toxic nationalism.
The pledge was tweeted out by Sam Altman, a prominent Silicon Valley venture capitalist. Read it below:
The pledge is intended to be a living document that will progress and strengthen as more Silicon Valley luminaries sign on and contribute to it.
The pledge is only the latest salvo in the war between Trump and Silicon Valley. Trump previously attacked Apple CEO Tim Cook for his highly publicized refusal to crack a terrorist’s iPhone for the FBI. “Tim Cook is living in the world of the make believe. I would come down so hard on him, you have no idea, his head would be spinning all of the way back to Silicon Valley,” Trump claimed with his usual empty bluster.
Trump has also slammed Apple for the way in which they handle global production and structure their taxes.
The tech industry hasn’t been taking the abuse sitting down. A previous letter from leaders within the community decried Trump’s policies:
“His vision stands against the open exchange of ideas, free movement of people, and productive engagement with the outside world that is critical to our economy — and that provide the foundation for innovation and growth.”
It seems likely the feud will only escalate further. Trump, perhaps the most ignorant figure in American culture, will be going up against some of our greatest minds.
Maybe someone should tell him his favorite weapon, Twitter, was invented by the people he’s waging war on.
