On her latest show, Rachel Maddow played a tape of a conference call that hilariously blew up in the face of President Trump’s budget director, Mick Mulvaney. Maddow could not get through the clip without bursting into laughter. (Video below.)
The White House failed to grasp the simple and routine procedure of muting the phones of outside callers. As a result, when Mulvaney was giving a nonsensical justification for Trump’s suggestion of a government shutdown, he found himself accompanied by classical music and interrupted by what sounded like a giggling child.
Then, things started to go fantastically off the rails. Mulvaney plead for his callers to mute their own phones and lost focus as the music escalated. When people began shouting in the background, a cat meowed, and increasingly odds noises burst forth, Mulvaney decried, “This is gonna be a disaster!” Maddow on a split screen, could not keep herself from laughing.
Finally, as the music changed to smooth jazz, Mulvaney gave up and disconnected the call. It won’t be the last time team Trump throws in the towel, but it will rarely be this funny.
