The Senate Just Slammed The Brakes On Trumpcare

Senator Roy Blunt (R-MO) announced that the Senate will wait for the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) to score the new healthcare bill before voting on it. Last week, the House of Representatives voted to repeal and replace Obamacare without an updated CBO score.

In an interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Blunt said:

“The Senate’s going to have to have the kind of score they need to move this forward and the Senate’s going to be looking at this to see what we can do to take the House work, look at what the House did, look at what we can do to improve that in our view.”

Blunt also noted that, unlike the House, the Senate will take its time with their version of the bill. A new version will also mean that the bill will need to be sent back to the House for a vote.

“In all likelihood you have to go back to the House and say ‘Here’s what you think, here’s what we think. Let’s be sure we get people more access. Let’s be sure we solve the problems of ObamaCare,’” Blunt said.

While Trump was hoping to ram Trumpcare through Congress as fast as possible – and without what will inevitably be a damning CBO score – this news coming out of the Senate is sure to devastate him. Lawmakers in the House are already facing unprecedented backlash from their constituents for being complicit in taking health coverage away from at least 24 million Americans. In a cowardly move, most Republican lawmakers have rejected calls to hold town halls, as well.

Senators, not so eager to align themselves with the embattled and unpopular President, won’t be so careless with Americans’ lives for a cheap political win.
