Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper told CNN today that he thinks that Donald Trump is responsible for an assault on the institutions that are the foundation of American democracy.
Appearing on CNN’s State Of The Union today, Clapper told host Jake Tapper that he considered the events of the past week “very disturbing to me”.
“I think in many ways our institutions are under assault both externally — and that’s the big news here is the Russian interference in our election system — and I think as well our institutions are under assault internally.”
Tapper immediately interjected, asking if Clapper meant under assault by the President. The former Intelligence chief replied “Exactly.”
Clapper’s assessment was a clarion call to Congress and the federal courts warning them that if they don’t keep the President in check, our entire system of government is threatened.
“The founding fathers, in their genius, created a system of three co-equal branches of government and a built-in system of checks and balances,” Clapper said. “I feel as though that is under assault and is eroding.”
Asked if he was surprised at how quiet Republicans on Capitol Hill have been on this issue, Clapper demurred on assigning blame, noting only that he hoped each member of Congress would follow their conscience and speak up.
Clapper is only one of many citizens who have come to the same conclusion: that Donald Trump is a threat to our democracy, and Congress and the courts need to remain vigilant to stop him from destroying it.
